This is an error message that flashes up when someone tries to cancel a securities account with an Internet trading site:

Would we talk about having a position? having positions? Or something else entirely?
thanks

Explanation:

When they invest money in stocks, the vast majority of investors "go long." That is, they plunk down their money, buy the stock and hold it in the hopes that the stock's price will rise in the future so they can sell it for a profit. In short, they're hoping to "buy low and sell high" as the old adage goes.

Essentially, they borrow shares of the stock from their broker, sell those shares at the current market price and then hope to make a profit by replacing the borrowed shares with shares they'll buy on the market after the price of the stock has dropped. In other words, these investors -- known as "short sellers" -- want to "sell high and buy low." http://money.cnn.com/2005/02/02/pf/expert/ask_expert/

Long and short. Definition: Somewhat the equivalent of “buy and sell,” however with an investing twists. If enter an order to “go long 100 shares of IBM,” it means you want to buy IBM. Likewise, to “short IBM” is to sell the stock. Long also describes your position in a stock. For example, your brokerage statement might show you were “long 100 IBM,” which means you own 100 shares of IBM. Your account could also show you were “short 100 IBM,” which means you sold 100 shares of IBM short. (See short selling).http://stocks.about.com/od/glossary/g/Longshort.htm

On the face of it, a more literal answer - like ojinaga's - seems the best option. 'posición' has a definite meaning in Spanish, but the notion seems to be translated in a range of ways in En. Yet see the definitions immediately above, the word 'position' IS used, so it should be clear from the context.
