When a company suffers a tax loss in a fiscal year, a certain percentage of that loss may be used as a tax deduction against taxable income in future years. This is known as a tax loss carryforward. The term in Mexican Spanish is "pérdidas fiscales por amortizar" or "pérdidas fiscales pendientes de amortización". In Mexico, the carryforward period is ten years. That means when a company suffers a tax loss, it can use 10% of that loss every year over the next ten years against taxabale income of each one of those years. It used to be 20% over a five year period, but the Secretaría de Hacienda y Crédito Público de México is hard pressed for cash.
