Mi documento es un contrato de mantenimiento preventivo de cajeros automáticos (ATM) entre un banco y una empresa de tecnología de computadoras. El país es Panamá.

Todas las referencias a dinero están indicadas en balboas (símbolo B/.), que es la moneda de Panamá. Por ejemplo:

"EL BANCO pagará a LA CONTRATISTA, por el servicio objeto de este contrato, la suma total de CIENTO CINCUENTA Y CUATRO MIL TRESCIENTOS SETENTA Y UN BALBOAS CON 00/100 (B/.154,371.00)..."

Sin embargo, en Panamá en realidad no se usan los balboas como tal. Es decir (un poco de historia), nuestra moneda ha estado a la par del dólar estadounidense desde nuestra constitución como república en 1903. Antes de eso, Panamá pertenecía a Colombia. Por lo tanto, aquí hablamos siempre de dólares y ya. El término "balboa", por lo general, mas bien aparece en documentos oficiales.

Entonces, mi duda es la siguiente: si estoy traduciendo al inglés, ¿puedo simplemente traducir balboas como dollars y usar el símbolo US$ o USD, sin mayores problemas?

En realidad no sé cuál es el destino del documento traducido. Me parece que es una licitación, sólo sé que el banco es el banco del estado y la empresa contratista es panameña.

There is always the (remote) possible that the Balboa will be unpegged some day, like, say, the Argentine Peso

yo pondria Balboas y luego pondria la cifra en dolares porque como el cambio es el mismo no hay problemas y asi estas en el lugar seguro, todos lo van a entender

disagree  Lila del Cerro: No estoy de acuerdo. Puede haber una controversia dentro de un par de años, y si en ese momento la relación de las monedas es diferente el traductor sería responsable de haber incluido una moneda que en el documento no se menciona.
