Compensating balance
Definition (US specific)

The balance required to be kept on deposit at a bank by a borrower when taking out a loan. Should the borrower fail to repay the loan either in full or in part, this balance would be forfeited. Compensating balances are typically 10% of the loan amount.

agree  marybro: I am more familiar with the term "compensating balance", but offsetting may be correct also..let's see what our colleagues say

  -> Thank you, Mary. Maybe "compensating" would be better for the american market. Either way, the banks will keep the difference!
