Spanish term or phrase: obligaciones y bonos

The document is a balance sheet listing all income/expense types. Basically a long list of terms with no other context.

I am having trouble differentiating between obligaciones and bonos. I cannot use bonds for both, but don't know enough about the difference between them to know what other word to use.

Could any one explain the difference/suggest possible translation?

Explanation:
There are no REAL differences. When you are speaking of financial market instruments, "obligaciones y bonos" are to all PRACTICAL effects, the same thing. And so you'll see in all the specialized dictionaries, like the Alcaraz Varó Hughes Financial, or Thomas West III's, or Pat Mazzucco's.-
Just assume that the Balance Sheet Items are supposed to cover a wide range of options, like debentures or other financial instruments, and so they name them in a very ample way.

I would name them "Market Securities and Bonds".-

Gracias Miguel, y a todos. I finally went with obligations and bonds, firstly as a slightly more literal translation, and secondly because the space for the target text was limited, and so it was harder to fit in Simon's suggestion, which I also think fitted well here.

Hello.

I worked for some time as a "data monkey" for a financial information provider, and processed hundred of terms and conditions for Spanish bonds.

Miguel is right in saying that bonos y obligaciones (they are usually said that way round) are essentially the same, but they do differ in one factor - Bonos are medium-term and Obligaciones are long-term.

Spanish treasury bonos, for instance, are of 3 or 5 years, if I remember ocrrectly, and the Obligaciones are of 10 and 15 years. This means that they will pay the bond holders a fixed rate every year until the 3, 5, 10 or 15 year period is up (at which time the bond matures and the initial investment is paid back). The longer the term, the higher the interest, usually (because they keep hold of your intitial investment for longer).

The corporate bond market follows the same pattern - depending on the "plazo" (term) they will call them bonos or obligaciones.

Hello again. In answer to your question: "finanzia [sic] largo plazo" and "fianzas y depositos recib." are definately NOT types of bonds. Bonds are a specific type of (debt) security which are potentially traded on exchanges in the same way as shares. They differ from shares in that the investor is effectively lending money to the government or company issuing the bonds, and in return they receive a regular interest payment.

Asker: This does fit well as many other entries on the same page mention long- and short-term items. To add more info, I've also just come across "finanzia [sic] largo plazo" and "fianzas y depositos recib." - are these yet more different term bonds? [I'm feeling like a "word monkey" at the moment!]

Black's Law Dictionary has the following definitions for "debenture":

1. A debt secured only by the debtor's earning power, not by a lien on any specific asset.

2. An instrument acknolwedging such a debt.

3. A bond that is backed by only the general credit and financial reputation of the corporate issuer, not gby a lien on corporate assets.
There are different types of debentures such as follows:

Convertible debenture.- A debenture that the holder may change or conver into some other security such as a stock.

Convertible subordinated debenture.- A debenture that is subordinate to another debt that can be converted into a different security.

Sinking-fund debenture. A debenture that is secured by periodic payments into a fund established to retire long-term debt.

Subordinate debenture. A debenture that is subject to the prior payment of ordinary debentures and other indebtedness.
