the reality of depreciation

Explanation:
Willem, I know my answer sounds bizarre, but let me explain.

Using obsolete equipment is a threat to the company's competitiveness because of the POTENTIAL harm they can cause. The meaning of threat is potential harm, not actual harm. The obsolescense of equipment is a threat even before the company feels its potential consequences.

Real Academia EspaNola:
Incidencia = (1) Hecho de incidir (effect); ... (3) Acontecimiento (occurrence).

In this case, I believe incidencia means the occurrence, not effect.

I previoulsy answered using "occurrence" as a translation of "acontecimiento," but on second thought, it doesn't sound good in English. The meaning is that depreciation and obsolesence are, in fact, threats. I think my new suggestion sounds more natural in English to express this idea.

"**The reality of obsolescence** requires that agencies and governmental entities keep pace with constant developments and improvements. ..."

"Apple sticks with the same old parts and the same old price for 4-8 months at a time. While this certainly makes Apple a more profitable company, it ignores **the reality of depreciation.** "

"...the CEO would not face **the reality of obsolescence.** (In an irony, IBM. sold off its PC division to a Chinese company not quite 20 years later. ..."
