agree  Ruth Ramsey: Yes, 11-month period ending......
2 mins
  -> Thank you Ruth!

agree  kleiner Kater: Yup. 11-month period.
2 mins
  -> Thanks Kleiner!

disagree  Richard Cadena: It should be "11 month period ended May 31, 2009". Month functions as an adjective and, therefore, is singular in this case.
2 hrs
  -> The use of ended/ending is subjective in this case so both could be considered correct!

agree  argosys: Same comment as Ruth above.

11 month period ended on may the 31st 2009

Explanation:
you can say 31st but it is more formal to add "the" and you definitely need "on"

neutral  Richard Cadena: eliminate the preposition "on" and the article "the", and it will be fine for accounting purposes.

in the 11 months to 31 May 2009

Explanation:
It is common in English to drop 'period', since '11 months' is obviously a period. There's no need for 'end/ended/ending' either - 'to' is quite sufficient. The date format depends on the target country - my answer is UK-OK.

11-month period ended May 31st 2009

Explanation:
Accountants are picky about this. Past periods "ended" future periods "ending".

agree  Lydia De Jorge: Yep. Key word is ended (past).
4 mins
  -> Thanks, Jessica! Yes, it would be right in normal text, but if financial statements are involved, they follow certain conventions, and exclude the "that". Lydia, as you can see, the system is having a bad day, and places replies where it feels like.

agree  ELIZABETH OROZC: Yes! Because the period already ended. Ending is used for example, the 11-month period ending May 31, 2010.
7 mins
  -> Exactly. Thanks, Elizabeth!

agree  Jessica Noyes: Yes, but I would say "that ended"
21 mins
  -> Thanks, Jessica!

agree  Travelin Ann: agree, although 31 rather than 31st
31 mins
  -> Yes. Thanks!

agree  cmwilliams
37 mins
  -> Thank-you!

agree  Richard Cadena: This is perfect. There is no preposition between the word "ended" and the next word which is the corresponding month.
2 hrs
  -> Thanks Richard!

agree  marybro
14 hrs
  -> Thanks!

agree  Louise Souter
19 hrs
  -> Thanks Louise! Unfortunately the asker has chosen a reply containing two errors :(
