Spanish term or phrase: el activo cubierto por los depósitos
Hi,

I'm currently translating a piece on the financial crisis in Spain and am having some difficulty with the above section of the following paragraph:

"Por otro lado, si bien la parte del activo cubierto por los depósitos se redujo durante los últimos años del boom crediticio, en los bancos españoles esta proporción continuó siendo mayor que en otros países de la zona euro (ver gráfico 2.17), lo que, en el momento actual, supone un colchón adicional desde el que encarar las turbulencias en los mercados de financiación mayoristas."

I'm OK with the rest of the sentence, it is just that phrase that is causing problems for me. My attempt is:

"However, although the proportion of assets covered by deposits reduced during the final years of the credit boom ..."

Thanks in advance for the advice and help!

assets for guaranteeing deposits
Explanation:
I believe that the deposits in this case (bank) are the liabilities than needs to be covered by the bank assets, that is the way I see it anyway....

the assets covered by the deposits

Explanation:
I'd translate it this way:

On the other hand, although the proportion of assets covered by the deposits declined during the final years of the credit boom ..."

To my understanding, these are risk assets that need corresponding amount of cash (deposits) as buffer. The ratio of deposits to such risk assets is higher in Spain than in other countries in EU, which gives assurance of better protection.
