Spanish to English translations [PRO] Finance (general) / housing financing | | Spanish term or phrase: descalce de plazos | Context is discussion of discussion of problems in financing housing in Latin America. Problem is that potential lenders have to depend on short-term borrowing themselves under unstable conditions (possible inflation, changing exchange rates, etc.) in order to make long term loans. They have to risk "descalce de plazos" i.e., the time frames are out of sync. It could be a "mismatch" as Marian Greenfield suggested years ago. I suspect that there may be no canonized English because there is no comparable risk in the U.S.
Is there a canonized term? |

| | maturity mismatch | Explanation: as you say, mismatch
Abstract
Substantial attention has been paid in recent years to the risk of maturity
mismatch in emerging markets. Although this risk is microeconomic in nature,
the evidence advanced thus far has taken the form of macro correlations. I
evaluate this mechanism empirically at the micro level by using a database of
over 600 publicly traded firms from seven Latin American countries. I estimate,
at the firm level, the effect on investment of holding short-term debt under
capital-account volatility. This effect is (statistically) zero, contrary to the
prediction of the maturity-mismatch hypothesis.
