Explanation:
In Tenerife old beds are often left beside the refuse bins in the street; some of them have a base where the mattress is supported by wooden slats, and I seem to remember a similar design of bed base where in place of the wooden slats, there were heavy gauge rubber straps. There were settees of this design (i.e. the base that supports the cushions) in the U.K. in the 1960's.
