Yes, the idea is definitely the money he bets, but you might want some alternative expression to keep the style colloquial and informal.

In this case "thorws down/in" might work for you. My guess is you might need a few more of these splashed around the text.

For smaller bets you might use "chip in" every now and then.

Overall Peter, given the nature of the text you need to feel free to use your imagination and not 'go by the book'. You want to make the whole thing sound lively and interesting and straightforward translation isn't going to do that for you.
