To have one’s fling


Explanation:
Echar (o echarse) una cana (o canita) al aire es, como dicen varios colegas, darse un gusto fuera de lo habitual, saliéndose de lo que uno acostumbra, y con un “aunque no debería…” implícito que puede llegar a lo “prohibido”; puede ser ir a un restaurante caro, tomarse una copa de alcohol o fumarse un cigarro si uno no lo acostumbra, irse de parranda o de fiesta cuando tiene que trabajar al día siguiente o no debe gastar dinero, ligarse a alguien así porque sí, etc… Por supuesto que si alguien va a serle infiel a su pareja también puede decirlo. En cualquier caso, cuando alguien dice “voy a echarme una canita al aire” generalmente precisa inmediatamente después qué es lo que va a hacer p. ej. “voy a echarme una canita al aire y fumarme un puro” o “voy a echarme una canita al aire, este fin de semana me voy a Las Vegas”, etc.

Smartranslators, como de costumbre, ha acertado dando esta misma traducción, pero agrega otras opciones con las que no concuerdo totalmente por tener cada una un sentido específico y no tan general como la que propongo:

Por ejemplo, aunque “to have a fling” también puede ser “echarse una canita al aire”, generalmente se usa más cuando se trata de un affaire.
En cuanto a “to let one's hair down” en español existe la misma expresión que es “soltarse el pelo” y se trata de mucho más que una cana! El mismo sentido tiene “kick up one's heels”.
Las otras dos: “go on a lark”: “lanzarse a la aventura” y “go on a spree”: “irse de juerga o de farra” no implican el que se salga de lo que la persona “debería” hacer.
