Spanish term or phrase:opción nula
This is from a Spanish article on data collection techniques in evaluating urban planning projects. The client wants US English.
I'm sure there is an exact term for this in English but I can't figure out what it is. Has anyone come accross this term before in research techniques and knows of a good term in English? Thank you.
Explanation: I think "opción nula" calls for a jargonish rendering; what it means (leaving things as they are) is explained in the following text.
"Zero option" has been used with particular connotations in specific contexts, such as missile reduction in the Cold War, but in a survey I think it will be clearly understood.
"What are the OPTIONS open to the client? The counsellor helps the client identify different approaches to dealing with the problem. [...] Important: In all cases the counsellor will ensure that one option describes a "no change" scenario. This is the "zero option"." http://www.angelfire.com/ab/brightminds/roghachoices.html
"The questions have changed with each survey. More importantly, all the Survey 2 questions did not have a zero option. This was a mistake and it lead to many missing values, because it was unclear whether a missing value to any question was indeed missing or a zero response." http://www.alswh.org.au/InfoData/Data Dictionary Supplement/...

Rachel, given that the respondents were given a list of options to choose from, I would stick with "none of the above" (keeping the quotation marks). Example: There is also an option to vote for "none of the above."
I've reclassified this question, as (a) your choice of the word "surveying" is misleading, as it's what surveyors do, and (b) although the context may be urban planning, "opción nula" is a common phrase that might be used in any everyday conversation.
Good point Jenni, other options included having the space turned into a shopping center, a natural park, a housing development, etc. Opción nula means not changing the use of the space and keeping it as a manufacturing zone. The article is analyzing the effectiveness of citizen participation in urban planning decisions.
Rachel, more information about the other possible answers to this question provided in the questionnaire would be helpful.

maintain present use / do not change present use
Explanation: If this has to do specifically with the zoning status of the building and whether the building should be classified for a different use, the wording should mention the issue of zoning changes, but I don't see that in the original (although it may be implied).
