Spanish to English translations [PRO] General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters / Greetings | | Spanish term or phrase: Unitarios de tv | Hi, I'm translating a resume that belongs to a scriptwriter. He wrote what in Spanish is called "unitarios" and I wonder what would be the English equivalent.
I mean a kind of tv series that is once a week on the air, with a different cast each time, and usually a linking thread among all of them.
Any bells ringing?
TIA! |
| | | TV anthology series | Explanation: This term is not widely used in British English, but it is standard in American English.
There is a general distinction (not always observed) between a series and a serial. In the former, each episode (programme) tells a self-contained story; in the latter, the story continues from where it left off in the previous episode. Soap operas/telenovelas are examples of serials.
In many series, the setting and the actors are the same in each episode: ER, Friends, etc. But in an "unitario", not only is each episode a separate story but the actors and even the setting are often, if not always, different:
"Como en todo unitario, habrá nuevos actores cada semana. [...] Si el unitario no es más común en la pantalla es por una razón bastante sencilla: los costos. "Las historias con continuidad, y con el mismo elenco, terminan por amortizar los gastos de decorado y de producción", explica Víctor Tevah, coordinador general de contenidos de Pol-ka. Pero en un relato como "Botines", donde cada semana se ve un nuevo elenco, en un nuevo lugar y con un nuevo fondo, la calidad se paga."

The term that most closely corresponds to this particular type of series is "anthology series":
"An anthology series is a radio or television series that presents a different story and a different set of characters in each episode. These usually have a different cast each week"

Sometimes anthology series run for years, so it may be desirable to specify the duration. |
