What's the best way to word this? I need something better than dangerous climate of intolerance. That's too literal of a translation. Here' s a little more context:

a dangerously intolerant setting/situation/atmosphere

Explanation:
Sure! This can be reworded and remain very strong, as in the source. I agree with our colleagues that the basic terms are great for the purpose, but I suggest some transliteration using adjectivization to smooth the rhythme of the phrase in the extended paragraph.
This was good craftsmanship to have sought some adjustment for your translation. Best of luck!

agree  Carmen Schultz: Yes, I like the use of atmosphere here; it sounds elegant and less literal than climate although climate works too (although sounds too literal)

You could change climate and dangerous to something else if you like but I think intolerance translates well into English.

You can probably state the phrase as suggested with the literal translation and if it keeps coming up in the text you can vary it because it would sound too repetive to say it exactly the same way each time (this is a technique used in creative copy). In this kind of text it is okay to vary language lest it sound redundant. Obviously, key words such as 'intolerance' can stay the same so as not to confuse the reader but in some instances you could venture out and vary the key words as well with synonyms that work (in this case 'intolerance 'seems to refer to' bias,' 'bigotry 'and/or 'prejudice' and then some...)
