Spanish term or phrase: La Asamblea de los Pueblos del Istmo en Defensa de las Tierras y el Territorio
This is the title of a community body in the State of Oaxaca in Mexico, from a Central American current affairs magazine article. What would be the most elegant translation of a slightly unwieldy name?
This is the context:

A finales de julio, la Asamblea de los Pueblos del Istmo en Defensa de las Tierras y el Territorio demandó cancelar averiguaciones, órdenes de arresto y causas penales iniciadas por empresas españolas contra quienes defienden sus derechos étnicos y repudian el desarrollo eólico en el Istmo de Tehuantepec.

Explanation:
Or "Defense" with an "s" if you prefer the US spelling, which Mexico usually does.

I'm assuming the original is correct and there is/are more than one "people"...

Of course, if they actually mean "pueblo" (town/village/locality) rather than peoples/tribes/ the form would be different.

My Spanish colleague here says that "peoples" is what first springs to mind for her, rather than villages...

Or (pax Jenni) regions...

But then again she knows nothing about Mexico ;)

Sorry, the system cut off Istmo. It must have been too long.

Thinking about this, "region" is probably better than towns/villages in this case.

disagree  Pablo Julián Davis: Context shows this Assembly is of peoples/ethnic groups, not villages

-> The inference was the territory, not any official municipal government within the territory, thus it infers the people of this geographic area.

Isthmian Peoples' Assembly in Defense of Land and Territory

Explanation:
Definitely Peoples (or Nations, on analogy to American Indian terminology), not Towns/Villages; the Assembly's own declaration of principles includes the words: "QUE SOMOS PUEBLOS ORIGINARIOS DE ESTE TERRITORIO DIVERSO QUE ES EL ISTMO DE TEHUANTEPEC..."

I also propose 'Isthmian' on analogy to the Isthmian Highway, Isthmian Canal Commission, etc. In the latter cases, the Isthmus of Central America; in the case of the Assembly we're talking about, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

"First Isthmian Canal Commission - 1899-1901 ... the American public the need for some type of canal in Central America -- it took the battleship ..." (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/facility/panama-canal...

Correction: Should say 'Lands and Territory'

Somehow didn't see Neil's translation when I sat down to answer this one - or maybe I saw but it didn't register in my mind - though I would definitely recommend 'Isthmian' as the adjectival form. ¡Gracias y saludos!
