Spanish to English translations [PRO] Social Sciences - Government / Politics / Political theory | | Spanish term or phrase: crítica propositiva | I get some hits for "purposive critique" and I suspect it's a specific term in leftist political thought (originating with Habermas?) denoting criticism of society that implies an agenda for change.
"Purposive critique" sounds clunky and ugly to me, but then so does a lot of the language of political theory.
Is it the correct term? Any other suggestions? What insights can you offer?
All contributions welcome.
Context:
Desde una crítica propositiva, la necesidad de transitar de la idea de “bienes comunes” hacia una convivencia global basada en el Bien Común de la Humanidad, es un imperativo civilizatorio que supone imaginar fundamentos nuevos de vida colectiva.
It's an academic article, of course. |

Purposive theory (or the teleological approach) is a theory of statutory interpretation that holds that common law courts should interpret legislation in light of the purpose behind the legislation. Purposive theory stands in contrast to textualism or statutory derogation, two other prominent common law interpretation theories.

Hi David! I agree that 'theory"may be too restrictive. I 'personallly don't have a problem with 'purposive' - what I do have a problem with is 'purposeful'; it has an entirely different meaning. |

Asker: Hi Muriel, yes I like it, "from the purposive standpoint" fits the context really well. But the term "purposive theory" does seem to relate pretty strictly to legal interpretation, and this essay is not really about the law at all. Might "teleological" fit more general political theory better than ""purposive"? What do you think?
