Spanish term or phrase: (abordar ) please see context
La masiva llegada a suelo italiano de inmigrantes sin permiso (más de 3.500 en el mes de junio y unos 23.000 durante el año pasado, sin contar los centenares que pudieron morir en el intento) impele al Gobierno a promulgar un decreto que otorga poderes **a la marina para abordar y devolver a sus países los barcos con inmigrantes sin permiso a bordo. **

Having trouble deciding on the most accurate verb here.
they board the boat (in order to look for people w/o papers)?

they pull along side the boat?

they can deal with the boat? (seems too general to me)

As always, thanks to all and happy translating...

agree Paul Stevens: I note your comment, James. I hadn't realised that you answered first - this is a weird new(ish) vagary of KudoZ which, I think, needs to be looked at!
