Cuenta un romance viejo que
hace muchos años el rey Alfonso VIII, empobrecido
y cargado de deudas por sus muchas guerras,
impuso un tributo a los hidalgos de Castilla. Por
cinco maravedíes —apenas unas monedas— se
sublevan tres mil caballeros y se congregan en el
campo, atando el dinero a las puntas de sus lanzas.
Don Nuño de Lara los arenga, recordándoles que
sus antepasados nunca han pagado impuestos: "El
que quisiere pagarle —dice— quede aquí como
villano". Frente a los hombres en armas, el rey
cede y deroga el tributo.
