Art/Literary - History / type of dance event
Spanish term or phrase: baile de candil
This is a literary text referring to a baile de candil put on by a small town for soldiers in the war to meet local girls. There are MANY types of "baile de candil", and this type does not involve any actual candles (many bailes de candil do) or other particular ceremonies, but is simply a dance (like a "social") organized by an Andalusian town in 1937 where soldiers go and local girls go accompanied by their mothers and other chaperones. I want the English to gget across the idea of this "event", it being organized as a way for young men and women to meet each other, but have no idea what to call it in English. Any ideas much appreciated!

explanation
Explanation:
Hi Idillma, I'm afraid every time I've seen "baile del candil" in English texts the dance itself has always got the name in Spansih. I thinks it's OK to leave it as it is. As it's a literary text, it must say somewhere that mothers and other chaperones would take the girls to this event where they'd meet young soldiers. Like with flamenco, you can leave it in its origial name or I guess you could also say "baile del candil dance" like I've sen it with "flamenco dance".

Good luck.

baile de candil - a ball in which local girls met soldiers -

Explanation:
I believe that you should leave the original name but add a brief explanation between dashes which is preferable to a note in the foot.

a party that starts at time when the candles have to be lit

Explanation:
that might have been the reason for the name: it was late and dark enough, so candles had to be lit.
