Spanish to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - History
Spanish term or phrase: se halla purificado en primera instancia
Background: a Spanish doctor has fallen from grace with the return to power of Fernando VII. He "fue sancionado con la pérdida de su empleo . . en una carta fechada el 13 de marzo de 1824, señala que SE HALLA PURIFICADO EN PRIMERA INSTANCIA".

Can anyone shed any light on the meaning of the clause in capitals, please? I have searched the Internet and can find nothing useful.

upon review of his case, he has been exonerated
Explanation:
Or, instead of "exonerated":

......cleared of all charges
......absolved of all wrongdoing
etc.

It seems that "en primera instancia" means that the "exoneration" was granted upon an initial review of the case.

Suerte.

agree  Cynthia Coan: In view of the blanks in the original text, we may never know whether, or to what extent, a court was involved in reviewing the doctor's case. "Upon revew (or initial review) of his case" seems like the safest wording to go with.

Explanation:
DRAE, purificar, acepción 4. tr. "Rehabilitar para el servicio del Estado a los impurificados por causas políticas."
This definition says "para" (rehabilitate). Had it said "en", then "reinstate" would be the word in English, imo.

Comments:

Many of the Google hits for "stand reinstated" come from Pakistani newspapers or webs. I was trying to find a verb for "hallarse, encontrarse" and preserve the adjectival use of "purificado". But I think the present perfect sounds more natural in English.

Also, the DRAE definition at the top says "por motivos políticos". So, another possible rendering would be:
"acquitted of political charges".
