Spanish to English translations [PRO]
Social Sciences - History / Peru, trade, late 18th century
Spanish term or phrase: Nueva España
This is from an article about trade between Spain and Peru in the late 18th century. Here is the full sentence:

El primer punto de inflexión llegó con el inicio de la guerra contra Gran Bretaña en 1739 y la obligada sustitución del sistema de flotas y galeones (temporal para el comercio con Nueva España, permanente para el del Mar del Sur) por un sistema mucho más flexible de navíos sueltos.

Am I right in thinking that "Nueva España" and "Mar del Sur" refer to the specific FLEETS or Armadas by those names, not to geographical regions? If I'm wrong about that, I have to re-think this entire section! I know that Armadas with those names existed, and it seems to me that the author is describing a temporary change to one of them, for the sake of trade, and a permanent change to the other. However, I keep thinking that maybe the reference is to trade WITH Nueva España and WITH Mar del Sur. Help!

I assume that if the reference is to the name of the fleet, I don't need to translate that name. If it's a geographical region, I do. Right?

Thanks in advance!

The British were giving the Spanish a lot of trouble at the time and so they had to renew the fleets for trade with New Spain.

agree  Maria Luz Ochoa de Olza Velasco: Spain didn't have "fleets" the way the US do, it had "la flota." The term is about the regions and Margaret's answer is impressively well-rehearsed.

New Spain
The Viceroyalty of New Spain was the name of the viceroy-ruled territories of the Spanish Empire in Asia, North America, South America, and its peripheries from 1535 to 1821.
New Spain's territory included what is the Bay Islands (until 1643), Cayman Islands (until 1670), Central America (as far as the southern border of Costa Rica until 1821), Cuba, Florida, Hispaniola (including Haiti until 1697), Jamaica (until 1655) Mariana Islands, Mexico, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Trinidad (until 1797) nearly all of the southwest United States (including all or parts of the modern-day U.S. states of California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Florida), and claims as far north as British Columbia and Alaska, but the northern boundary of New Spain was redefined by the Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819. For at least part of its existence, New Spain also included Venezuela.

Asker: Thanks for this reference, desertfox. You wouldn't believe how many English-language sources I consulted equated New Spain with just Mexico! I knew better, but this is very helpful.

Reference: The Treasure Fleet

Reference information:
I think you are right thinking that this refers to a fleet, in the links below you can read the following:

"The 1715 Treasure Fleet refers to one of the Spanish treasure fleets returning from the New World to Spain.[…] The principal elements of the fleet, known as the Nueva España (New Spain, i.e., Mexico) Fleet, had gone to Veracruz in Mexico to deliver…"

"Two great convoys were organized to transport the treasure. The Tierra Firme fleet would visit Cartagena and Nombre de Dios. The Nueva España fleet would go to Vera Cruz.[…]
The Nueva España fleet always had at least two heavily armed galleons…"

I hope this helps!

Note to reference poster
Asker: Thank you, Isabel, for making me feel less ignorant! I DID, indeed, find many references in both English and Spanish to different fleets or flotas, including "Nueva España" and "Mar del Sur." But further research on my own, plus the answerers given, have convinced me that the reference is to the regions. Good references--they will be useful throughout this project. Have a great weekend!

disagree  coolbrowne: Sorry: though such fleets did exist, the fragment "...comercio con Nueva España..." rules out this interpretation.
14 hrs
agree  Richard Boulter: Since the refs demonstrate that the query term was, in fact, used to refer to the military-escorted trading fleet (not the overall military armada), naturally it would be common-usage for people in the trade to refer each fleet to its operational range.
