agree  Charles Davis: Agree on two conditions: cut the apostrophe -- 1890s, NOT 1890's -- and hyphenate mid-1890s or mid-eighteen nineties // Sorry, but 1890's is definitely wrong. All style guides, from Chicago on down, agree. Even the NYT has stopped doing it!
