Spanish term or phrase: fundemos nuestro gobierno
Hola!

Estoy traduciendo un documento histórico y cita a Carlos Pellegrini: la oración dice así:
"Reconozcamos que no habrá para nuestro país la posibilidad de progreso político ... mientras no fundemos nuestro gobierno sobre el voto popular"

y la segunda parte de la oración cuando la traduzco suena muy artificial, alguien me puede ayudar?

Mil gracias

English translation:Until our government is founded on popular vote,...
Explanation:
Until/Unless our government is founded on popular vote, our country will have no possibility for political progress

Maybe switching the order of the two phrases that make up the sentence will help. Good luck!

neutral  Deborah Lockett: James, this is how they say in Spanish "until" or "unless", please see the other two answers which are correct

-> Yes, I'm aware of that, Deborah. I think in this case it would be “until”. But I find it ambiguous, and an unnatural way of expressing it in English. My choice of wording essentially means the same thing, and seems more natural to me.

neutral  Shana Yael Shubs: I think this wording is similar to a double negative: thing A will not happen until thing B does not happen, instead of thing A will not happen until thing B happens. The latter seems like a more natural construction to me.
