Tipos es una palabra informal, a veces dependiendo del contexto puede tener una connotación positiva o negativa, y significa los muchachos, los chicos, los hombres. En este caso, tiene una connotaciñon negativa. ¿Qué hicieron los tipos=militares?

Entiendo el matiz (y ya me suponía yo algo de eso...). Digamos que si puedes decir "¿Qué hicieron los personajes estos?" lo puedes traducir por "what did these characters do?". Y como supongo que en el contexto inmediatamente posterior ya quedará claro qué matiz tiene el "characters"...

Podría decir entonces, what did these characters do? Aún no puedo visualizar el aspecto negativo, que es bastante fuerte en esta pregunta ya que se habla de la ineficacia de los militares a la hora de declarar la guerra en Malvinas, Argentina.

agree  María Diehn: That is what I understand when they say "guys". Of course, when I hear: "gals." I do not understand "tipas." But psicutrinius might be right in that the term "guys" does not have, per se, a negative, derogatory meaning.

  -> That's exactly what I meant, Maria. Depending on context, "tipo" may carry a wide range of nuances beyond what "guy" translates. And I think this is the case here.
