Spanish term or phrase: conocerse
I'm not sure if this means 'get to know oneself' or 'get acquainted'. The essay is by a young man who was quite self-absorbed until he met up with some immigrants and began to hear stories of their lives. I included the rest of the paragraph, which hints at the metamorphosis to come.

I think that in this context the person is talking about meeting other people (as you do in university)

so you might go with "to get to know/meet other people"

really don't think this has to do with "knowing oneself" .. but let's see what others have to say :)

Thanks, David. Thanks for re-posting. I also think Jenni has a point about including 'other' people--in this context, that is.

agree  Thayenga: I agree with your last statement, although there's always a chance that "getting to know oneself" was whaat the author had in mind.

agree  MedTrans&More: I agree with Thayenga, in that there is a slight chance it means 'getting to know oneself', but it's more likely to be your version

to meet people

Explanation:
In some countries from southrtn Mexico to the equator this might mean to meet people (lower economic class)

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks for your insight, Lourdes. This may be in the back of the authors' mind. Elsewhere in the essay he talks a lot about meeting people he would not otherwise encounter.
