Like Jenny, the first thing that came to mind was 'outskirts', but I gather they are/were separate entities, now within the main town's sphere of influence.
How about "outlying suburbs/villages/communities" depending on which category they may fit into.
I don't know if this helps at all, but when I lived in Buffalo, they actually called the different "rings" of suburbs "first tier suburb", "second tier suburb" and so on, because the suburbs tended to occur in something approximating layers around the city. I lived in a first tier suburb because it was one directly adjacent to the city.
The first thing that comes to me are "the outskirts" or "outlaying areas" if it is a smaller town. The "township limits" of Spanish towns are pretty well fixed, but some extend widely beyond the town centre. If towns are well placed for such activities, they often attempt to build a wind farm or solar panel station, or even a new housing community, to generate more income.
Jennie, Christine - Both of your answers would be fine except my town is not so big. I mean, the second example cites Barcelona, but my town is probably less than a tenth of the size of Barcelona.
