Spanish term or phrase: el medio en si
When asked what came to mind about a certain company XXXX which is a rather large producer of computers and well known electronic devices, this respondent wrote, "el medio en si" .

That's all there is. No other context. Sorry.

Muchas gracias de antemano por su ayuda.

English translation:the standard bearer
Explanation:
in the sense of the standard by which all others are measured. Closer to the sense of DLyons' explanation.
Took a bit of poetic license but this would fit the context (lack thereof) for me and sounds like something someone would say as a response.

Or the background against which everything is judged. IBM, Microsoft used to be and Google now is.

It IS the media.

Explanation:
It would be great to have a better feel for the entire article or the person who is speaking, but with little or no context, that's how I read it- a giant that is omnipresent, trendsetting or a market leader. DLyons is correct in that they rise and are eventually replaced.

Explanation:
Only a guess, without further context to go on.

the world of ICT itself

Explanation:
I think it helps if you specify what the "medio" is as it relates to this firm: ICT (information and communications technology).
