Spanish term or phrase: "Con el oido se nace, la escucha se hace"

Utilizado en una presentación de ventas (cómo escuchar al cliente). No he dado con una expresión equivalente en inglés. Podría "abrir el acordeón" y entrar en una explicación sobre el significado de la frase, pero quisiera saber si ya hay alguna traducción para ésta.

Trying to come up with something concise, with the feel of a frase hecha although it is not one. A rhyme would be too forced.

No conozco ninguna frase hecha ni refrán equivalente. Hay muchísimas formas de expresar la idea. He pensado en otras: "Many hear, but few listen", "Anyone can hear, but few learn to listen", "We are born hearing but must learn how to listen". Al final, me quedo con la versión propuesta.
