agree  Claudia Luque Bedregal: I've always seen "absoluta" translated as "total" but if we have both terms this is the best way to render it :) And "gran invalidez" is "severe disability" according to Mapfre ;)

For the record... although I don't know the "right" way to say this, I have been explaining this in English quite a lot recently since my husband has just been given the "total".

Total means that you are pensioned off from work because you have become physically or mentally incapable on a permanent basis of doing your habitual job. You could however, on approval, take up a different profession. My hubby's case makes this reasonably clear: he was a farmer and as such given to carrying pigs and hay bales around. Now he can't walk without crutches after a serious leg break and therefore can't carry on with that profession. He could however try to get an office job (ha ha), and he would be allowed to work at that.

If he was retired however as "absoluta" then they are saying he could never work again at anything.

And gran invalidez I think refers to needing carers....
