This is probably based on the lawyer joke: to find out what type of lawyer you're dealing with, if the cat runs away, he's a dog; if the cat attacks the lawyer, he's a rat.
Seems to mean a "case-by-case" method. Any ideas?

I think there's a more likely explanation to hand: that "gato" is a misprint for "gasto", and we're talking about the "método del gasto" for calculating PIB, which in English is the "expenditure method" for calculating GDP: a very common expression in the field. Anyway, that's my theory! |

Asker: I think you're right. If I hadn't found so many references to the "método del gato", I probably would not have been so easily misled.
I lived in Madrid for 3 years and never heard the expression, but that was way back when Franco was still alive!
