Spanish term or phrase: método del gato
Dado que muchas de estas empresas venden productos y servicios intermedios a otras compañías, esta cifra no es comparable a nuestro cálculo del impacto de Internet sobre PIB, que sólo contabiliza las ventas finales a los consumidores al haber empleado el método del gato.

This is probably based on the lawyer joke: to find out what type of lawyer you're dealing with, if the cat runs away, he's a dog; if the cat attacks the lawyer, he's a rat.
Seems to mean a "case-by-case" method. Any ideas?
¿Habrá por allí un gato (madrileño) que me pueda ayudar?

English translation:expenditure method
Explanation:
Like you, Paul, the only use I can find of "método del gato" is in the lawyer joke. But although your interpretation is a valiant and ingenious attempt to make it fit your context, I'm afraid I don't buy it. I think there's a more likely explanation to hand: that "gato" is a misprint for "gasto", and we're talking about the "método del gasto" for calculating PIB, which in English is the "expenditure method" for calculating GDP: a very common expression in the field. Anyway, that's my theory!

Notes to answerer
Asker: I think you're right. If I hadn't found so many references to the "método del gato", I probably would not have been so easily misled. I lived in Madrid for 3 years and never heard the expression, but that was way back when Franco was still alive!

agree  James A. Walsh: Ha! I have to say, I was getting pretty "deep" about trying to figure this one, so decided to refresh, as I was getting nowhere. The penny very-much dropped when I saw your suggestion. Good one.
