This is indeed an awkward one in English. In the past, I've always just rendered the texts accordingly, as I was always been too uncomfortable with the direct results of translation. If this was me, I'd go for something like this:

You could also put it as: "Investments can often Undergo periods of short-term negative returns..."; I say this because, although "undergo" is generally perceived as more negative (which is usually not a good thing to be expressing in terms of investments), I do think it balances the sentence out somewhat regarding the use of the rather vague [and rendered] "occasionally".
