Confessional struggle:
This matter of the king's marriage was of great political importance, the Protestants and the Catholics being equally interested in the issue. Had he not been so good a Catholic Sigismund might well have imitated the example of Henry VIII by pleading that his detested third wife was the sister of his first and consequently the union was uncanonical. The Polish Protestants hoped that he would take this course and thus bring about a breach with Rome at the very crisis of the confessional struggle in Poland, while the Habsburgs, who coveted the Polish throne, raised every obstacle to the childless king's remarriage. Not till Queen Catherine's death on February 28, 1572 were Sigismund's hands free, but he followed her to the grave less than six months afterwards. Sigismund's reign was a period of internal turmoil and external expansion.

Confessional battle:
Perhaps one can say that the confession is like a charter of freedom, or a letter declaringthe slave a free person. It does have legal status and character. Not only must one tend it and keepit carefully, but one can be excluded by it if one does not “dare” to confess it. Thus, especiallythose who do not preach and teach in accordance with it can and should be disciplined. Neithershould the arts of interpretation be misused to reintroduce the slavery from which the confessionaimed to liberate us. On the contemporary scene, particularly in ecumenical discussion, it is justthis kind of question that has to be pursued with consummate care. For the confessional battleand the question of subscription is in essence always that stated by St. Paul in Gal 5:1: “Forfreedom Christ has set us free; stand fast therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

neutral Nicholas Ferreira: I don't find this justified. A Google search gave me the following: Results 1 - 10 of about 11 for "confessional battle". Unfortunately confessional in proper English is not used in this context.

holy war

Explanation:
"Religious war" would be acceptable of course, but "holy war" is much more common, especially in these times, and would more likely be used in English.

Suerte.
