| Clarification request(s) and responseYaotl Altan: 7:06pm Jan 1, 2008: We need much...but much more context. Deborah Lockett: 8:41pm Jan 1, 2008: I support Gary's explanation, and I also think there may be some journalistic device at work (a near-miss play on words), because to me the expression looks just like "carteras o talonarios" (wallets or checkbooks).

| | youth and reserve teams or checkbooks (receipt books) | Explanation: Oxford
cantera f
1 (de piedra) quarry
2 (de deportistas): los jugadores que salen de la cantera del club the young players who come up through the club’s youth and reserve teams; la cantera es nuestro
principal activo our (pool of) young players are our main asset
talonario m
a (de cheques) checkbook (AmE), chequebook (BrE)
b (de recibos) receipt book
c (de volantes) book of vouchers
With this context, this is the best I can do - apparently either home grown or purchased.
