Journalism / feature article type piece about a healthcare project
Spanish term or phrase: ayudando a los suyos
Hi all,

This is an article about a healthcare project and begins with a story about one man's travels to a healthcare centre. The whole sentence is:

El trayecto se hace interminable. Por su cabeza pasan los recuerdos de su infancia, los cuidados de su madre y el temor a no poder curarse y seguir AYUDANDO A LOS SUYOS.

I think it means looking after his family's needs, but I cannot find any confirmation of this. I would appreciate your opinion(s).

Many thanks!

agree  Alistair Ian Spearing Ortiz: Yes. Maybe "his family" could work better if the goal is to have an emotional impact on the reader.

help his nearest and dearest

Explanation:
We're all saying the same thing, but in different ways.

I think 'los suyos' has an emotional charge not carried by words like 'family' or 'relatives' and that 'his own' might be a tad literal.

'Nearest and dearest' means family but can include non-related beloveds, which I think 'los suyos' can too.

"help his own"

Explanation:
In this case it should be "help his own"

By the way.... " Simon Bruni: "his own what"?
"His own" by itself is enough. His own means "his own people, relatives."
