I have to disagree slightly with FVS and Phil, althought what they say is correct. However, it seems that the term is used more loosely in the query sample simply to refer to people with an eye on the media, not necessarily an official body. Am not happy with either monitor/watchdog for the reasons below, hence my stab at it.
Maybe the term 'watchdog' has different meanings in different areas but to me a 'watchdog' is an organisation that protects rights or makes sure companies/individuals or whatever are toeing the line and abiding by regulations, i.e. consumer watchdog, advertising watchdog etc.
Thanks for piping up Phil. I think that you can look at this two ways: that watchdogs are making sure that this event is receiving the correct press coverage (there are disability watchdogs), or that the writer was way off base using the word "vigilantes" (which always seems to refer to watchdog groups) and should have used "servicios de recortes de la prensa" or something similar. Looking now, I did find something that apart from the weirdness of the use of the word "vigilante", would support Lisa's answer based on the mention of 12,000 articles: PDF] EQUIDATOS, .. To be fair to Simon, "vigilante de la prensa" does seem an odd choice of phrase, because when you Google it, it does refer to watchdogs. However, that makes no sense in this context - the text seems to be saying that the event generated lots of press coverage, which is a good thing.
That's precisely what we're talking about, Jenni - though they don't just clip articles, they tell you what the media are saying. Watchdog is wrong - it means a body that makes sure the media behave themselves.
I voted for "watchdog" instead of "monitor" (which sounds much better to me) because when I dipped into Internet, I saw too many "clipping" services who stated that they were press monitors. I don't think that "monitor" is incorrect, but it could be confusing.
