4 hrs confidence: peer agreement (net): +1 investment portfolio underlying the policy
Explanation: I agree that "portfolio" is the ideal word for "cesta" here: better than "basket". It is the usual term for a "collection of investments held by an investment company, hedge fund, financial institution or individual"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portfolio_(finance)
However, to my mind "covered by" is not the right expression for "afecta a". Something covered by a policy is protected by the policy, so that the policy compensates the beneficiary in the event of the thing covered being lost or damaged. The thing covered by a life insurance policy is the life of the insured person. "Covered by the policy" corresponds to "asegurado por la póliza". Normally investments are not covered by insurance policies, so this expression is unusual.
"Afecta a" means that the policies are linked to the investments, in the sense that the premiums are invested in this portfolio and the value of the policy derives from the performance of the investments. You might say that rather than the policy covering the investments, the investments "cover" the policy.
"Linked to the policy" would be a common way of expressing this, but I expect you may want to use "linked" for "ligada" just before this phrase, so I would recommend "underlying the policy".
"Variable Life Insurance (VL) is a permanent Life Insurance plan that provides flexible premiums and death benefits dependent on the value of the separate accounts from the company's investment portfolio underlying the policy."

"The value of the policy follows the increase and decrease in the value of the investments underlying the policy. I.e., the policy cash surrender value as well as the payout in the event of death vary according to the value of the underlying assets."

"One type of whole life insurance is variable life insurance, in which the death benefit and cash value benefits vary in relation to the value of the investments underlying the policy."

An illustration of the meaning of "afecto a" in this context:
"Se imputará como rendimiento del capital mobiliario a que se refiere el artículo 25.3 de esta Ley, de cada período impositivo, la diferencia entre el valor liquidativo de los activos afectos a la póliza al final y al comienzo del período impositivo en aquellos contratos de seguros de vida en los que el tomador asuma el riesgo de la inversión."
