Me parece que "public enquiries office" es demasiado para una ventanilla de informes en una cárcel, que creo de eso se trata. Hay muchísimas referencias al término "enquiry desk" que se ajusta más al concepto, y cito algunas a continuación.

We have a small team of people who man the public enquiry desk from 8.45am to 4.30pm. This ensures if you visit regularly you will see a familiar face. Enquiries after 4.30pm will be dealt with but an officer will be called out as required.
