This was one of the illustrations of financial translation "pitfall" in a truly excellent series of workshops at the ATA meeting in Orlando, Florida last fall. The lecturer was Silvana T. Debonis, who is a working translator and a university professor. Amongst other activities, she "trains professionals in economic, accounting, and financial terminology at the Colegio de Traductores Públicos de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires (Association of Sworn Translators of Buenos Aires) and at the Consejo Profesional de Ciencias Económicas de Capital Federal (Association of Public Accountants of Capital Federal). She evidently regularly gives workshops at the ATA, and is by far the best (clearest, most informed, best organized) lecturer I have even had the privilege of hearing! I became an instant fan!
