witness confrontation procedure

Explanation:
diligencia de careo refers to process whereby witnesses are confronted face to face with a questioner. In US courts this is usually a cross-examination. The most general way to refer to it when you don't know if it's an in-court or out of court proceeding is to call it "a witness confrontation procedure" or even a "witness interrogation" procedure or "an adversarial proceeding with witnesses" - usually refers to questioning in presence of a judge, but might have occurred elsewhere

Butterworth's legal dictionary defines careo as "confrontation of witnesses"
It presupposes that the witness will be questioned by the opposing party to see if the testimony is trustworthy.
