Law/Patents

PD. Proponentes de "the weight of the law" y "the generals of the law" favor de abstenerse.

Explanation:
In your particular context, I would say "bear the consequences that the law imposes (or pursuant to the law)," "bear the burden of the law," or "bear the full weight of the law." See these examples:

Generally speaking, civil disobedience is not a legal excuse for disobeying a law, and those who disobey a law must expect to bear the consequences that the law imposes for such conduct. (http://www.courts.gov.bc.ca/CJBC/InquiriesResponses/Response...

While manufacturers will be required to provide the information on the content label, it will ultimately be the automobile dealer who will bear the burden of this law. Automobile dealers will be placed in the difficult position of having to explain the illogical and misleading content information. (http://www.aiada.org/pubs/test/ts032796.htm)

We support the object of preventing abuse of children. Those who abuse children should be brought before the courts and made to bear the full weight of the law. Children in our society must be protected. Therefore, we support the bills in principle.

As far as "generales de la ley" is concerned, the Diccionario Bilingüe de Terminología Jurídica (Bossini/Gleeson) expresses it as: "standard legal questions and interrogatories as to witnesses' circumstances, usually formulated by the court." I would express it as "the court's interrogatories."

Hope it helps.

Explanation:
I guess I should have given an example of the second term in use:

The plaintiffs do not offer any explanation for the failure of each plaintiff to submit answers to the court's interrogatories. Their brief, however, could be read to suggest that they believed the submission of Angulo-Alvarez's affidavit satisfied the court's demands. To the extent this is in fact their position, we reject it. The court was clear that each plaintiff was to submit answers to its interrogatories.

the full burden of the law

Explanation:
I agree in general with the previous respondents, and would also like to suggest that in this case, in spite of your understandable objections, one of the best answers is actually "the full weight of the law", however my proposed answer feels more formal and legalistic.

As for the "generales", a good solution would be "examination in court" or "examination by the court" which would cover not only the specific personal interrogatories but also other relevant evidence: from the context I do not think the journalist was using this phrase in its full exact legal sense.

No references, just "educated native speaker" gut feeling.

Explanation:
Saludos,

Patricia
