Creo entender "da lástima", pero... ¿hay alguna expresión fuerte en inglés que le hiciera de equivalente? Mil gracias.

This is an expression my grandmother always used. It's sort of like "it makes me shudder," but even worse. I'm 100% sure of the meaning, but it's not everyday English.

It can only be used referring to oneself.

Yo nunca había escuchado eso de "grima", pero aquí va la definición del DRAE:

grima.
(Quizá del gót. *grimms, horrible; cf. a. al. ant. grimmi, hostil, nórd. grimmr, rabioso).
1. f. desazón (ǁ disgusto).
2. f. dentera (ǁ sensación desagradable).
3. f. Hond. Temor muy intenso.

En Panamá, de algo que dé miedo o asco (o incluso vergüenza), se dice que "da cosa". Muy útil la expresión, porque el significado varía según el contexto ;o)
