JUDÍO

La palabra judío viene de la región llamada Judea (יהודה = Ieúda) que se encuentra hoy situada parte en el Estado de Israel y parte en los Territorios Autónomos Palestinos.

En Judea se encuentran ciudades y lugares legendarios: Jerusalem, Belem, Mar Muerto, Jebrón, Jericó, Masada y otros.

La primera definicion de quien es judío, llega por el "no": No es una raza. No es una creencia religiosa. No es una postura política.

Hay judios de todos los colores, creyentes y ateos, y que defienden, con ferocidad, posturas políticas opuestas.

Asi que para definir quien es judío, me remito a las palabras del escritor Marcos Aguinis que dijo: "Judío es aquel que quiere serlo, y morir por ello".

I can certainly understand yout students' concern. In this case, as in many, the word is polysemantic - that is, more than one meaning per word. However, in other cases there are social, including religious reasons for the words. In many places "black beans and rice" are called "moros y cristianos", with an obvious reference toward perceived race.

Mike, thanks again for the comprehensive answer. I currently co-teach a beginning level Spanish class at a Jewish Day school. We discussed the two possible definitions for the word judia and I
promised I would look into. Students expressed concern that there might be a less that complimentray reason for the dual use of the word given the history of Jews in Spain.
As a new user of this web site I hope that I have navigated my inquiries correctly. -Victoria
