I think this question should remain a 'PRO' question because the issue of translating the word 'alterar' correctly is important for all translators.

'alterar' can mean to change or alter something; however, it can also mean to 'disturb' or 'upset' or 'affect' and I think in this case 'alterar' has to be translated in the second sense. 'Changes' or 'alters' the metabolism, in English, is vague and unclear. This translation calls for the meaning of upsetting or disturbing the metabolism, affecting it in a negative way.
