Bueno, en esta referencia indica que los potros masculinos son "colts" y que "foal" es genérico (incumbe tanto machos como hembras), en todo caso el contexto de tu frase no permite saber si son caballos o yeguas, yo utilizaría "foal". La definición anterior la obtuve de un diccionario de veterinaria.
