To everybody who made an attempt at this term, my apologies. I got in touch with the moderator of the discussion from which the term is taken and it turns out that the participants were indeed using an anglicism, but a totally different one: "skills" ( !!! ) so all the speculation was for nothing. The person transcribing the meeting didn't speak English and didn't recognize the term apparently, so the wrote 'skin' and not 'skill', which was simply being used the same way we use it in English. Again, my apologies.

Wow, what an idiot, I read your brief quite quickly and thought it read "ascensores" and not "ascensos"!!! Now after reading alizestarfire's comment I've just realised, well ignore my suggestion completely... well it has been a busy day, sorry.

My first thought upon reading the brief context was their look or perhaps even their color of skin. More context would have helped me out too.

Sí Silvia, están hablando de accensos en el trabajo, en una consultora. Well, Kathryn you may be right. There's both positive and negative but most of the discussion centres on salary, training, work-atmosphere, that sort of thing. In terms of pay-raises, most of the interviewees have stated that employees are given rises based on experience or know-how. It's all fairly middle-of-the-road, no extreme complaints.

It certainly happens that employees are promoted or not promoted because of the way they look and dress. So maybe the person is talking about a negative experience? What's the overall context of the document? Is everything else positive?

¿Tenés más contexto? Porque si estás hablando de ascensos en el trabajo quizás podría ser simplemente "piel", en el sentido de "color de la piel". Aunque en otro sentido también podría ser muchas otras cosas.

Hi Kathryn, thanks for the suggestion. I know what you mean as regards the word being used in a software context so I can see where you're coming from. But it strikes me as a little odd. To give you more context: employees are speaking about their experience within a consulting firm. Surely there'd be some upset if people we're being passed up for promotion based on their physical appearance? It just doesn't seem right to me.
