It's not a boatswain, it is one of a list of job titles in an automobile factory and I have no clues as to what any of them actually do apart from being part of the car manufacturing process. Can anyone help me on this?
Thanks in advance.

If you don't know the actual hierarchy criteria, it doesn't really matter whether the post is really higher or lower, basically you just need something to avoid using "foreman" again.
I'd suggest "gaffer" but the definition is essentially the same (a person who exercises control over workers) but it always sounds a bit rural to me ( likely legacy of Rupert the Bear books).
"Supervisor" is a catch-all that could work too... but I like the "hands-on" feel of chargehand.

Notes to answerer
Asker: unfortunately I've already translated capataz earlier in this list as foreman (forewoman.. we live in politically correct times), but overseers a good option. :-)
