Ot "imitiation leather"... the problem is that "synthetic/imitation" do not sound very attractive, which is probably why they invented the name "curpiel"...

Asker: i added the possibility of "faux", which occurred to me later, to avoid negative connotations!

agree  Noni Gilbert Riley: Imitation leather. (Leatherette has really naff connotations for me - and anyway as you point out, it´s a trademarked term.
