Spanish term or phrase: moqueta de desecho
Antes de iniciar el montaje/desmontaje de los stands es obligatorio colocar moqueta de desecho sobre la zona que se utilice de paso de materiales, carretillas,... y sobre la zona donde se deposite toda la herramienta y los materiales, con el fin de que estos no dañen el suelo durante dicho montaje o desmontaje.

I know it's a type of carpet but not sure of the term in English. TIA!

Asker: Thank you! Definitely not a 'mat' but it could be a runner. I googled Protective Floor Runners and I think this is it!

Then disposable carpet would be the best term (it may or may not be recycled as Liz notes, although I hope for the planet's sake that it is).

Asker: Hi Jenni, drop cloth was my first thought but according to the client it is a disposable, sturdy carpet specifically designed for construction inside facilities where the floor has already been laid out.

agree  psicutrinius: or disposable carpet//when setting up an exhibition there is a lot of rejects and/or quite sizable trimmings of even the carpet being used fpr decoration. This is what they mean (I believe). And carpet absorbs impacts better.
