Now, I was never brilliant at Maths, so would appreciate some help/confirmation here.
The glossary entry for "áreas y centiáreas" is unsatisfactory from a British English point of view, so...
here is the context
...y se halla enclavada en el centro de la parcela urbana senalada con el número xxxx de la finca xxxxx, sita en término de Denia, partida Costera del Real o Santa Paula, que mide nueve áreas y setenta y siete centiáreas.
I have worked this out as 977 m2.

"área" = "1 square hectometre = 100 metres × 100 metres (a square with sides 100 metres long)"
Of course that the best way to translate is just to say what you have already figured out:
"measuring 977 m2."
But if you want it to be translated into English system, then it would be:
31.257 m x 31.257 m = 977 m2
102.55 feet x 102.55 feet = 10,516 square feet.

Uhmmm, sorry, maybe it's not clear:
977 m2 = 10,516 sq ft
1 meter = 100 centimeters = 100 / 2.54 / 12 = 3.28 feet
1 foot = 12 * 2.54 centimeters = 30.48 cm
1 inch = 2.54 cm
1 foot = 12 inches
I think UK uses metric system, isn't it?

Uhmmm, actually, my translation is wrong, I mean, not the conclusion, but the translation of "área".
área (Spanish) = "are" (in English) [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Are]
"Are (symbol a, pronounced /ˈɛər/ or sometimes /ˈɑr/) is a unit of area, equal to 100 square metres (10 m × 10 m), used for measuring land area."
So, "área" is NOT = 1 square hectometer
because 1 sq hectometer = 100m x 100m = 10,000 m2.
I did not mess the Math because I actually looked for confirmation about the value of "área" in my own language, Portuguese. I knew that "área" in Spanish is "are" in Portuguese (yes, the same way it is in English) and I confirmed that "1 are" = 100m2 in a Brazilian page, actually :-). Later, when trying to translate back to English, I made the confusion and, ironically, "are" in Portuguese spells identically to "are" in English. :-)
